PTA/PTO in the cloud

What is the PTA in a cloud? What is the “cloud” anyway? These days almost all data is stored permanently on a private and secure place that can be accessed via the internet. Typically, the remote server that a user is accessing via the web interface is the “the cloud”. Data in the “cloud” does not mean anyone can see it – only the authorized users would be able to access the data. Data could be your PTA’s documents, forms or whatever you might want to store on the cloud. A PTA/PTO deals with secure and private data and financials year after year, as they build the student directory and run half a dozen fundraisers each year. Keeping your PTA/O information on a private and secure place on the internet, that is not google-able is the best time saver and collaborative tool. Instead of sending emails loaded with attachments to […]

LCJSMS Changes Student Directory to Online Format with MobileArq

An article covering MobileArq Student Directory was published on the Summit Board of Education site http://www.summit.k12.nj.us/ The new web-based and mobile tool, developed by a local mom, changes district communication How are parents at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School taking advantage of the new PTO-provided web-based and mobile student directory since it was made available to them last September? MobileArq, the brainchild of Summit resident Niru Mallavarupu, a parent at LCJSMS, has changed the way parents contact each other. MobileArq allows parents to be better organized, and helps them become more engaged in the school community, Mallavarupu said. The mobile and online apps allow parents to communicate more easily with each other and with the school.   Gone are the days, she said, where parents have trouble locating the elusive directory that never is where it should be, and having to purchase extra copies for the car.   In September […]

PTA/PTO Directory Chair’s critical role

You care deeply about your child’s school and PTA/PTO activities. You are dedicated, have organizational skills and you want to make a difference. That is why you volunteered to become Directory Chair, taking on the responsibility of compiling this year’s school directory. Now, you have a headache, because the process is tedious, wrought with inefficiencies, and demanding. Here are a few sources of headaches for any parent involved in the directory creation process.   1. Collecting Information from Families Some parents never send in their forms. You can’t blame them, though, considering the multitude of forms they are asked to fill out every year by the school. The Directory Chair goes after each parent/family to collect the forms. 2. Typing, Formatting, Editing, Checking all the Information The pile of filled-out address forms is sitting on your desk. Now it’s time for you and your team of dedicated volunteers to type […]

School Directory Production

School Directory Production can be a torturous process I was talking to the “PTA ex-Directory Chair” in one of the Elementary Schools about the school directory process in her district. She told me that after three years of producing the school directory for her elementary school, she was “BURNED OUT” and stepped down last year. Let me call her Mrs. Directory Chair. Mrs. Directory Chair was very frustrated about the problems she faced in the school. They used archaic systems to collect the information, namely paper forms. Although the district collected the information, they would not give her the updates she needed for the existing parents. This was in part due to the “privacy policy”. Each time she would walk into the office to get some information, they would ask her for all her details ALL OVER again. And she was visiting them three to four times a week! Although […]
